The Ford LTD Crown Victoria (1983-1991) is the box-body Panther-platform full-size Ford, sold as one continuous generation from the 1983 model split until the aero 1992 Crown Victoria replaced it. Every one is body-on-frame, rear-wheel drive, with a 5.0L (302) V8 and the AOD four-speed automatic as the standard powertrain. The 302 ran central fuel injection through 1985 and switched to sequential EFI for 1986, while a carbureted 5.8L (351W) V8 served police and fleet duty. A 1988 freshening revised the front and rear styling; otherwise the body changed very little across nine model years.

Platform and body

The 1983-1991 Ford LTD Crown Victoria rides on Ford's Panther platform, a body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive chassis with a coil-sprung live rear axle and recirculating-ball steering, shared with the Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car. It became a stand-alone model line for 1983, when Ford moved the plain LTD badge to the midsize Fox-body sedan; Crown Victoria had been the top trim of the full-size LTD since 1980, and there was no sheetmetal break from the 1980-1982 Panther LTD. Body styles were a four-door sedan, a two-door sedan (dropped after 1987), the woodgrain-sided Country Squire wagon, and a plain-sided LTD Crown Victoria wagon added for 1984. The squared-off roofline and upright glass earned the whole 1979-1991 run its "box Panther" nickname.

Engine lineup

  • 5.0L (302 cu in) V8, standard every year. Central fuel injection (CFI, a two-injector throttle-body system) through 1985, rated 130 hp net for 1983 and 140 hp net for 1984-1985. Sequential multi-port EFI arrived for 1986, raising the rating to 150 hp net; an optional dual-exhaust system offered for 1990-1991 brought it to 160 hp. This is the engine in nearly every civilian car.
  • 5.8L (351 cu in Windsor) V8, restricted to police and fleet sales in the United States from 1983 on; Canadian retail buyers could still order it through 1991. It kept the Motorcraft 7200 variable-venturi carburetor for its entire run and never received fuel injection in this application, rated 165 hp net through 1985 and 180 hp net from 1986 to 1991. These carbureted 351W cars were among the last American-built passenger cars sold with a carburetor.

There were no six-cylinder or diesel options in the LTD Crown Victoria. All ratings are SAE net.

Drivetrain and transmission

Every 1983-1991 LTD Crown Victoria is rear-wheel drive through the AOD four-speed automatic with a mechanically locking overdrive top gear. No manual transmission was offered, and the old three-speed automatic was gone before this generation began. Standard cars carry a light-duty rear axle; the Ford 8.8-inch axle came with the Class III trailer-towing and heavy-duty packages from the mid-1980s, and a Traction-Lok limited slip was available. Towing packages were a common factory option given the car's full frame.

Year-by-year changes

  • 1983: LTD Crown Victoria becomes a stand-alone model line on the existing box Panther body. 5.0 CFI standard, AOD standard.
  • 1986: The 5.0 switches from CFI to sequential electronic fuel injection, picking up drivability and a bump to 150 hp. The LX trim joins the line.
  • 1987: Last year for the two-door sedan; only 5,527 sold against 105,789 four-doors.
  • 1988: Front and rear freshening, with rounded fender edges, a lower and wider grille integrating the headlamps and turn signals into one assembly, and new rear styling. This is the one visible styling change of the run.
  • 1990: Driver airbag added as standard on every version, along with the first full dashboard and steering-wheel redesign since 1979 (the audio and climate controls swapped positions).
  • 1991: Final, shortened model year. The 1992 Crown Victoria dropped the LTD prefix, adopted the rounded aero body, and replaced the pushrod 302 with the 4.6L modular V8. 1991 was also the last year for the Country Squire wagon; no wagon followed.

Trims and variants

  • Base LTD Crown Victoria: the volume sedan.
  • S: the stripped fleet trim, minimal brightwork and equipment, the usual starting point for taxi and government orders.
  • LX: the upper trim from 1986 on, with upgraded interior and convenience equipment.
  • Country Squire: the full-size wagon sibling, with the same powertrains, an available rear-facing third seat, and the dual-hinged tailgate.
  • Police package: heavy-duty cooling, suspension, brakes, and electrical, ordered under the P72 fleet code, typically with the carbureted 5.8L 351W. These box-era police cars are the direct ancestors of the 1992-on P71 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.

What owners deal with

The box LTD Crown Victoria is a simple car to keep running. The 302 and AOD are cheap to service and parts interchange broadly across 1979-1991 Panthers. Common age items are AOD overdrive wear (the lockup shaft is the known weak point under hard use), sagging rear springs on wagons, CFI cold-start quirks on 1983-1985 cars, and rust in the lower rear quarters and around the rear window. The 1986-1991 SEFI cars are the ones most buyers seek: better starting, better mileage, and the same body.
