The Mercury Grand Marquis of 1992-1997 is the aerodynamically restyled generation of Ford's rear-wheel-drive Panther platform, sold as a four-door pillared sedan in GS and LS trim. For 1992 it replaced the previous 5.0 liter (302 cubic inch) pushrod V8 with the 4.6 liter (281 cubic inch) modular SOHC V8 backed by a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. It shared its chassis and drivetrain with the concurrently restyled Ford Crown Victoria, and the station wagon body (Colony Park) was dropped, leaving the sedan as the only body style.

Platform
The 1992-1997 Mercury Grand Marquis uses Ford's body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive Panther platform, carried over from the earlier boxy Grand Marquis but reskinned for 1992 with rounded aerodynamic bodywork.
